Coaching for Teachers
The question of coaching for teachers, or coaching in education- Is it worth it?
‘We are always so focussed on the children and what they need and where they are going next. It’s nice to have the space and opportunity to talk and reflect on me as a teacher and leader.’
Coaching for Teachers – The most important question
I feel this question is at the heart of everything
How does coaching enable educators to be the very best they can be for the students they teach?
Teachers are the people who:
- Have the power to inspire and impart knowledge
- To motivate a generation to become the very best they can be.
- Plant the seeds of possibility.
- To harness the unique gifts of every student.
- Enable each student to become rounded individuals of society.
WOW! The enormity of the responsibility on educators within these statements is immense.
Additional pressures
On top of this, the current issues within education bring to the fore the incredible pressures placed on educators. The pressures of:
- Ofsted
- workload
- behaviour management
- targets
- assessments
- impact of covid but to name a few.
The list seems to be endless.
What about us?
Within this, where is the time for educators to think about themselves? Where is the time for them to reflect? The time to consider their wellbeing? Furthermore, the time for them to consider for themselves their needs about professional development and where they see their careers leading? Additionally, the time for them to share their concerns?
How can coaching and help?
This year, I have been honoured to coach and mentor senior leaders, teachers and students for over 200 hours in a range of settings around the world. The key to every person moving forward with their careers is knowing themselves better and giving people a safe space, away from their current setting, to be honest with themselves so that they can move forward to be the best they can be for the students they teach.
As one leader stated about what had been most useful in their coaching session,
“Time to think and talk to someone not directly involved but who has the knowledge to understand. I am now more aware of my capabilities.’
Over the next few weeks, I aim to delve into the benefits of coaching and mentoring and key themes in education, reflecting directly on the comments of educators who I have had the privilege to support. Some of the common threads have been
- gaining perspective
- developing strategic direction
- developing intentional language
- using praise
- difficult conversations but to name a few.
By drawing on the experiences of educators, hopefully we will explore together the value of coaching and mentoring in education. In the meantime please connect with me on Facebook and Instagram
